NORTH ISLAND BAND CONTEST.

The first tests took place this evening. Ihe weather was fine and a very large number of people gathered in the beautiful grounds of the Jockey Club. The B grade bands, of which there were ten played first, their test piece being "Belle of Brittany." Nelson Band topped the list with 128 points, Wanganui City being next with 124, and Gisborne City third with 119. The others played as follows:—Cambridge 118, Wellington Tramways 117, Waitara 115, Blenheim 108, Feilding 105, Manaia 102, Opunake 90.

The judge said th-it Nelson put up an cxctllent performance. The first grade contest between Wanganui Garrison and Petone proved a very easy thing for the champions, who in the language of the judge put up a very fine performance, while Petone came in for rather unfavourable criticism. Wanganui scored 120 points and Petone 76. The test piece was "Liszt." This morning's results are: Side Drum Solos—Uonovon, Gisborne, 83; Lindley, Nelson, 78; Mexted, Blenheim, 75; Olliver, Cambridge, 73; Robinson, MaDaia, 73. Tenor Trombone—Walling, Petone, 114; Irownson, Wanganui Garrison, 109; Gray, Wanganui Garison, 108; Sullivan, Nelson, 107; Levar, Wellington Tramways, 105; Humphrey, Wanganui City, 101; Weir, Manaia, 9/; Haybittle, Feilding, 96; Turncliff, Blenheim, 95; Douglas, Gisburne. 94. Euphonium—A. Kay, Nelson, 125; W. Hickman, Wanganui Garrison, 116; D. Williams, Wanganui Garrison, 114; J. H. Kerby, Waitara, 83. Flugel Horn—Cole, Wellington Tramways, 117; Gould, Waiiganui Garrison, 106; H.
