The teams from the District Higti School that were competing for the Battalion Shield at Papawai on Saturday, arrived home by the afternoon train. The boys, although not successful in winning the shield, gave a good account of themselves. Cclour-Sergeant Early in the Teams' Match put up the highest individual score at one range, and succeeded in winning a trophy in the Association Match.
The committee of the Golf Club discussed at its last meeting the advisability of changing some of the greens pro tem, as the land is going under the plough. The annual meeting takes place on April 13th.
The AH Blacks' Concert Company gave a sacred concert on Sunday evening, in the Olympic Theatre. The attendance was large. In connection with the recent slander action, Walsh v. Tumor, which was settled out of court, arbitrators have been appointed, Messrs Brechin and Westlake acting for Walsh, and Messrs Pauling and Chennells for Turnor.
Mrs George Matthews has leased Mr Wagstaff's residence in Wakeman Street, and intends to open a private boarding house. At the meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers' Union on Saturday, it was decided that instruction in wool-classing be commenced at once. Messrs Dalgety and Co.'s large store was placed at the disposal of the committee, the offer being accepted. Intending students are requested to forward their names as soon as possible to the secretary, Hv J. A. Walsh. The secretary was instructed to write to the Auctioneers' Association, asking for a reduction on the commission chirged on dairy stock, the present commission, 5 per cent., being considered too high, and suggesting that water troughs be provided at the saleyards for stock.
The annual meeting of the Woodlands Hunt Club was held in the Commercial Hotel on Saturday evening. Mr Arnold motion re raising the annual subscription was carried. Mr T. V. Rodney was appointed Master. Three applications were received or the position of huntsman, and were left in the hands of the committee to deal with. Mr P. Valois has sold his farm at Waiowaka to a local resident. The sale was arranged by Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd. Mr J. D. Galvin, of Hamua, was successful in winning the 100, 220,
and 440 yds handicaps at the Alfredton sports, held last week. The Levin Cup, for the most points, was also won by this promising young athlete. Dick Yule, of Pahiatua, succeeded in breaking the tape first, in the 120 yds hurdles.
