"POOR ARGUMENT."
NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA. £" DEFENCE SCHEME. United Press A««iation-;B, Electrie Telegraph w Capynght. Received March 11, 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, March 11. The "Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on Lord Kitchener's,report, with regard to New Zealand's defence, says: It was a poor argument to settle the question of New Zealand's joining the Australian federation on the score of distance, be- ■ cause Pwth is further from Sydney and Melbourne than the latter capitals are from Auckland and Wellington Moreover, seas unite, and do not divide, people of the same xacc. Now Lord Kitchener finds Australia and New Zealand must betaken to- | gether; in war they must be associated, and although in this connection the advke which suits one is appropriate to the other, it would be aburd to say that that must draw New Zealand into the Commonwealth. We do not believe anythine of the kind. But not until each gets its baptism of fire will there be any needful pressure for union. Lord Kitchener's programme will prepare the way: the:e ■will be a combining in the near for mutual defence of a mighty Empire, and this will be a long step forward."
