BIKE LAMPS WANTED.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Now that Mr J. D. Rockfeller is distributing his millions, it has occurred to me that he might be prevailed upon to favour Masterton with a cheque to buy bicycle lamps for those who are too mean to buy them for themselves. It would need a fairsized cheque to aupply them all, judging by the number that I see every night rushing along the ent aide streets after dark, both male and female cyclic?, without a light. As an instance, one night some short time ago, I counted four- j teen cyclists between the Catholic Church and Kurupuni Store, and only two of them'had lights. Any night in Hall street, Lincoln road, Chapel street and other thoroughfares anyone can see, not one out several lampless bikes travelling along at a good pace, and the funny part of it is that although I see so many lampless bikes, I never see a policeman. Funny isn't it? I wonder if it is merely a coincidence. Perhaps the police don't parade the above streets at night for fear they might get knocked down and their uniforms dirtied. Then, again, perhaps, it is that they are bashful and don't like to ask the female "bikes" their names. Anyhow, whatever it is, they are of no use whatever for that* particular purpose. But surely something should be done before an accident happens, and as for bells, I have entirely forgotten the sound of them. I fancy that it is years since I heard' the tinkle of a bicycle bell, anyhow it is in the long, long ago. Trusting these few hints may have the desired effect, and that we shall see hear more bells at night before long, and, also, that we shalljmeet a policeman occasionally somewhere else than in Queen street at night.—l am, etc., VERITAS.
