SLAUGHTERMEN ON STRIKE.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
AUCKLAND, March 7.
When the new men engaged by the Farmers' Freezing Company to replace the strikers appeared at the works this morning, the strikers made an offer to resume under the conditions of the old award provided the company would at once consider their claims for increased wages. The company declined to give any promise, expressed or implied, offering to tafee them back od the old terms. This they rejected. The butchers refused to go to work with the new men, and the company has therefore closed the works, and one hundred men have been thrown idle. It is stated that the union secretary refused to admit the new men to membership, although qualified under the rules of the union and the terms of the award.
