THE RACE FOR THE SOUTH POLE.
A GERMAN EXPEDITION. EXPECTED TO START IN OCTO-BER-NEXT. Received March 7, 9 a.m. .BERLIN, March 6.
First Lieutenant Filchner, of the German general Staff, and an explorer ot Tibet, the Pamir?, and Turkestan, will lead a German Antarctic expedition, which it is hoped will start in October, 1910. He purposes establishing a far base in the Weddell Sea, and then crossing the Continent. On reaching the Pole, instead of turning back, he will follow Sir E. Shackleton's route to the Eoss Sea, meeting midway a provision depot established by a sufcsidiary expedition from Ross Sea. If two ships participate in the expedition, it will cost £100,000; if only one, the cost will be £60,000. A high personage has anonymously contributed £15,000, and others £3,000. Lieutenant Filchner explained his plans to a meeting of the Geographical Society in Berln. Professor Nordenskjoid, who was present, expressed his approval of the clans. -
