WAIRARAPA RIFLE ASSOCIATION'S CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING.

RIFLEMAN W. N. KUMMER LEADS FOR THE AGGREGATE. (Special Reporter). Ideal weather prevailed yesterday for the opening of the Wairarapa Rifle Association's annual championship meeting at Papawai, near Greytown. Between 80 and 90 competitors were present, including three ex-champions, and several of the present day crack shots. Riflemen were present from as tar South as Gore, and from beyond Auckland in the North. Tne day was suitable for the occasion in every respect, and although a slight breeze was blowing from the East, some good scores were registered, including several possibles at the 500 and 600 yards' range. The secretary of the Association, Mr A. L. Webster, had all arrangements most complete, and the success of the meeting, which will finish this evening, is, practically, assured. The total prize money offered by the Association amounts to £127, besides several valuable trophies that have been donated to the Asso- j ciation. Challenge Cups, presented by Messrs W. C. Buchanan, W.P., J. D. Rivers, Hastings, H. Walden, Levin & co. and Lever Bros, Port Sunlight, are altfo being competsd for, the rifleman obtaining the highest aggregate in certain matches taking possession of these cups for one year. Mr J. Bidwill also presents a Shield for the highest aggregate obtained in the five prin- j cipal matches, such Shield to be held for one year. A gold medal will also be presented to the winner by the same donor. The shooting opened with the W.F.C.A. Trophy Match, 10 shots at 500 yards. This match was re- . stricted to members of the Associ- { ation in the Wairarapa, Masterton I and Pahiatua electorates,. and South J ol the Manawatu river. The winner, Mr D. McLeay, is a member of the, Opaki Rifle Club, and he secures the W.F.C.A.'s trophy, valued at £3 3s, with a total of 49 out of a possible 50. B. J. King (Opaki) and E. E. Vennell <[Te Wharau) each put on j a score of 49, and receive trophies valued at £2 2s and £1 17s 6d, respectively. Other riflemen securing trophies of the undermentioned value are as follows:---G. Hyde (Opaki), 48, £1 10s: Lieut. F. Bolton (Pahiatua Mounted Rifles), 47, £1 ss; M. Mcintosh,;A. J. Cameron, John MeKenzie, H. H. Mawley (Opaki), W. N. Kummer (le Wharau), Sergeant H. Walden (Greytown Rifles), S. Marenzi (Eketahuna) and Neville Willoughby, Te Wharau, 47, each win trophies valued at 10s 6d. The Nursery Match, 10 shots at 500 yards, was won by a young shootist, only 17 years of age, Private H. Brownlee, of No. 1 Thames Rifles, with a score of 46, entitling him to £1 ss. The following won cash prizes:—Rifleman. W. Nix, 43, £i; Sergeant Morgan, 43, 153; Rifleman T. C. Irving, Greytown, 42; J. V. Reed, 41, A. Henderson, 41, 10s each; H. J. Dagg, 40, and H. J. Webster, 34, 5s each. The Carterton and Mastertcn Matches we*e fired during the afternoon, Private F. J. Causley, of No. 1 Thames Rifles, winning the former, and E. E. Vennel, of Te Wharau Rifle (Jlub, the latter. Possibles in the Carterton Match were made by Reg. Vennell (Te Wharau), SergeantMajor Maingay (Piako Mounted Rifles), Captain Domigan (Gore), at the 500 yards range, and W. P. Henderson (Sounds Rifle Club), and J. McKattie (Opaki), at the 600 yards range. The following is the prizs list of the Carterton and Masterton Matches,-
