SUPREME COURT. By Telegraph—Prsss Association. NAPIER, February 27. Joseph Thomas Christie, a youth who absconded from Burnham, and was this week convicted of theft and forgery, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment. Mr Justice Cooper remarked that it was no use send ing the prisoner back to Burnham, but he would make representations for his transfer to Invercargill, where special provision was made for dealing with criminal youths of this class. John Henry Farrelly, charged with f.rgery and uttering, failed, to appear when called on at the Supreme Court, and his bail was estreated. HOTEL DESTROYED. DANNEVIRKE, February 27. The Herbertville Hotel and an ad- j joining billiard room were destroyed | by fire yesterday. Next to nothing was saved. The origin of the fire is a mystery. FEILDING' SHEEP FAIR. FEILDING, February 27. At the Feildipg annual sheep fair yesterday, up to one and a quarter guineas was realised for Southdown ewes. Romney ewes brought twentyone shillings. Forty thousand sheep were offered. SERIES OF THEFTS. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 27. For some time past a series of extraordinary house stripping thefts have been taking place in Pafrnerston, mostly from houses whose occupants have been away on holiday. Last night Detective Quirke arrested a young man named Jospeh Powelka (who was lately before the S.M. Court on a charge of attemped suicide) on five charges, involving theft of goods valued £125. Tha goods taken included almost every form of household furniture, bedsteads, tables, washstands, duchesse sets, carpets, linoleums, pictures, watches, clocks, also a quantity of rubber tyres taken from Clarkson's Wholesale Cycle Depot. All the good 3 missing were found in accused's house, together with an electric lamp, chisels, revolver, and a box of cartridges. Powelka was brought before the stipendiary magistrate this morning and remanded.
CHRISTCHURCH ITEMS. * CHRISTCHURCH, February 27. A heavy nor'-wester is blowing today. At s present it looks unlikely that the Christchurch Regatta will be held at Lake Forsyth. The South Island Rifle Association's meeting is in progress to-day on the Redcliffs Range
