AMUSEMENTS

ORGAN RECITAL. A fairly large audience assembled at Knox Church last evening, to hpar the organ recial given by Mr Maughan Barnett, of Wellington. The organist was assisted by Mr H. T. Green—a recent arrival from Home- -who sang two sacred solos. Mr Barnett, who was in good form, opened the recital with a choral prelude in D Minor, written by Bach. This was followed by a pretty gavotte in Dby the same composer. Schubert's Ave Maria was an acceptable item, as was the same composer's "Momen's Musicaux in F Minor." The organist had an op-, portunitv of showing olf the different qualities of the organ in Mendelssohn's Nest Organ Sonata in F. Wolstenhoim's "Answer," was the organist's next solo, and was followed by an '"improvisation." Both were enjoyable items. In Grey's "Hymn Celeste" the voix celeste was effectively used. An enjoyable recital concluded with the organist's fantasia on the hymn tune set to "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing." Mr Green, who has a tenor voice of very pleasing quality, sang, "If with all your hearts," and "Star of B«thlehem " Though the singer suffered from a cold his items wera very acceptable. It is uodersk,.. that pecuniary profit will be made out of the recital, but such recitals are certainly of much benefit from an educational point of view.

THOMPSON-PAYNE PICTURES. There was a record attendance to witness the Thompson-Payne Pictures at the Foresters' Hall last night, and large numbers failed to gain admission. Ihe new programme to be presented to-night is a first-class one, and full of novelties. A fine dramatic study entitled "Sister Angela" has received great kudos wherever shown, and will be produced for the first time in Masterton to-night. Several other stars will be produced, among which will be "The Indian Runners' Romance," "The Unlucky Winner,'" "Picturesque Corsica," "The Farmer's Kace for the Cup," "Mother Mitchell's Cat," and "A Surgical Operation."
