CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
ESTATE PURCHASED AT ASH
BURTON.

The "Guardian" states that the Government has purchased from Mr George Palmer the Ruapuna Estate, I containing 4,431 acres, for closer settlement purposes. The land, which is about twenty miles from Ashburton, is well-known for its fertile qualities as being fine grazing country, and as producing splendid crops of turnips, rape and oats, it should therefore be capable of sub-division Into nine farms of about 500 acres each. The estate belonged to the late John Ballantyne for many years. Ruapuna is tha only estate in the Ashburton country acquired by the Government for closer settlement purposes in the last dozen years, the Highbank Estate purchased about, 1898 being the last one to be 80 deal with in that way.
