(From Our Own Correspondent.) Saturday. A painful accident happened to Mr F. Ofsoski when cycling into town j from Longbush. As he was descend- ( ing a hill at a fair rate, he observed | j a couple of briar bushes on the road, , and endeavored to steer between them, with the result that the machine skidded, landing him with ] great violence on the ground. His arm was seriously cut, and his hip, legs, wrist and fingers were considerably the worse for the fall. The spill stunned him, and for about two hours he lay on the roadside. On reaching Carterton, four stitches were put into his arm, and the other injuries attended to. Wednesday next is to be observed as a close holiday from noon here, the occasion of the People's Day of the Masterton A. and P. Show. The metalling of the Main Road through Carrington Settlement, from Cobden Road to Cemetery Line, has been commenced. . The rural instruction course, instituted by the Education Department, commences in the local school next week. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days set apart for die purpose, and the pupils will be taught the art of poultry and bje farming, etc, and general agriculture. The second e»ent for the Fire Brigade Shield—the manual—was decided last evening and resulted:—No. 1 Team (Captain McKenzie's), and No. 2 Team (Lieut. N. McKenzie's), with lsec penalty, dead heat, Ist time 34 3-ssec; No. 3 Team (Foreman H. McKenzie's), 3rd, time, 39 3-ssecs (lsec penalty). No. 4 team (Lieut. Jackson's) was disqualified. Mr Okey, the newly-appointed engineer to the Wairarapa South County Council, arrived here yesterday.
A bioscope entertainment was given in Victoria Hail last evening by the Keystone View Company, When there was a large audience, and the entertainment was thoroughly enjoyed. After meeting expenses, which amount to a little over £4, the balance, £1 15s, in accordance with arrangement with the Company, will be spent in the purchase of twelve stereoscopes and 113 views, to be used in the High Schooll for illustrating lessons in geography and history.
In the Police Court this morning, before Justices of the Peace, John Walker, on remand, charged with breaking and entering the house of Mr G. W. Deller, was further remanded until the 18th iriat,, on the application of Mr M. Lavery, who appeared tor accused. Bail was allowed as before. Last evening, in the local Bowling Club's pairs tournament, Ramsay and Rawlings were defeated by F. Lindop and Phillips—l9 and 14, after an interesting game.
