CRICKET.

By "Hercules.' Another unfinished match ha 3to be played out,"at the end of this round in Saturday senior cricket Last Saturday Carlton disposed of the remainder of the Masterton batsmen for nine runs, and then occunied the wicket for the remainder of the afternoon, the innings finally closing for 270. Skeiley got going for the firat time here, this season, and his 71 included some nice strokes. Harry Ogier also "came out of his shell," and showed that he has still some of his old representative form left Madsen also showed that ha is still fit, and his 39 not out was compiled by vigorous hitting. Logan was the most successful of the Masterton trundlers, and his average reads 5 for 67. Moorhouse, Hooper, Iggulden and Redmond also took wickets. "Dolly" Esson was very useful to his side, stumping three and catching two of his opponents out, the catch that dismissed Moss being particularly quick. The senior matches condu :ted by the Wairarapa Cricket Association this year have so far without exception drawn good crowds, and the class of cricket and exciting finishes have helped materially to popularise this healthy summer sport. Carlton and Carterton seniors will try conclusions on the Park Oval today, and as boch teams have their best elevens in the field, and the wicket is in tip-top order, an exciting contest should eventuate. This week will be a memorable one for cricket enthusiasts throughout the Dominion, as yesterday Otago made her bid for the Plunkflt Shield, and it is anticipated that the game will be the most evenly contested yet played for the trophy, and the Australians made a start with their tour with their match against Wellington. Visits such as these from our Australian cousins will help cricket along considerably as at present it generally has to take very much second place to football. The results of the first day's play in both these matches will be found elsewhere in this issue.

Thursday cricket matches again drew a good number of spectators this week, the matdi on which the balance of attention settled being the Cariton v. Carterton match, which at present is anybody's match, although Carlton have the advantage if any.

W.F.C.A. sprung a surprise on to Rivals with their 259, easily the highest score this eleven has put together this year, and then dismissing eight of the Kival men for 87. Rivals did not have their best combination in the field, as they were without the services of Waters and Berry, who are both away on holiday leave.

The Junior (Saturday) fixtures, (the first game in the second round) will be continued to-day. S. Matthew's B travel to Carterton to finish their match, the bus leaving at 1.30 p.m., and Masterton and S. Mt-a thew's A finish their match on the f ark Oval, a start being made at 2.30 p m. sharp. Since Dodds last season put up his brilliant baiting and wicket-keeping performance in the match Australia v. Rest of Australia, upon which occasion he "kept" to Cotter, states the "Tasmanian Mail," his selection for tha New Zealand tour had been regarded as safe, and Gorry's selection before that ol the Tasmanian can safely be put down as a little piece of humour on the part of the selectors. The programme of matches, etc., arranged lor the tour of the Australian cricket team through New Zealand is as follows: Feb. 5. -Leave Sydney for Wellington. Feb. 11, 12, 14—Australia v. Wellington. I In al!, New South Wales has won 4£ I to Victoria's 39, 84 matches having tieen played. The Sheffield Sftield record of the States for 1909 10 is: South Australia 3 wins and 1 loss.; New South Wales 2 wins and 2 losses; Victoria 1 win and 3 losses. The second Test match between tht M.C.C. English team and South Africa, played recently, ended in South Africa's second win, the "rubber" thus going to the Colonials. South Africa scored 199 and 347 and England 199 and 225. A. D. Nourse scored 69 and G. C. White 118 for South Africa, and J. B. Hobbs 53 and 70 for England. The Sydney "Referee" writing anent the one time possibility of the abandonment of the Australian team's tour in New Zealand on account of the hitch m the financial arrangements, says.:—"lt is safe to say that if the tour had been abandoned In this way, the Board of Control would have been loth to organise another combination at any future time to visit New Zealand." lhe following team will represent the Carlton Club in the senior championship match against Carterton, on the Park Oval, this afternoon: —N.
