MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submit- j ted at the monthly meeting of the J Masterton County Council: — J Opaki Riding. j Pmpossd subdivision of Matahiwi Estate: I h-ave inspected the roads in i company with Mr Holmes and his surveyor, and there is little alteration required on the road located, and proposed to be formed. I would respectfully suggest a the extension line asked to be dedicated to the Matahiwi Northern boundary. A line bearing in a direction North east through original lots 2 and 3, is more favourable a3 it traverses an open valley with ground nearly level. The general course heads for a low saddle immediately above the homestead of late Mr Brown Hunt, where a more favourable connection might be effected with the Miki Mild Road. Mr Holmes \ has signified his willingness to give the alternative line conditionally upon the road being left umenred and not used until such time as it is made a through road to the Miki Miki. , .rsj , Te Whiti RidingMas ter ton- W aim ata Road: While j some extensive stripping is being ; made in connection with metalling ■ contract No. 207 at the Te Ore Ore pit. I have made terms with the contractor for the delivery of some 400 loads to make up depressions on the side widths. I have also culverted and improved the junction of the Weraiti with the main road by filling up the side drams and raising the | roadway. I Weraiti Rjd: I beg to direct the Council's attention to the necessity for acquiring a quarry a - the Weraiti saddle. An area of about 2| acres would get a workable and good supply of metal. It is probable that the next contract from the Taueru Bridge might be economically metalled from this source.

Rangitumau Riding.

Wangaehu Road: Some 130 cubic yards of stone has been delivered on the weak limestone length north of the Wangaehu Bridge. The largest stones on the newly metalled south of the Wangaehu Bridge are being broken, and I purpose cartirg some fine quality metal to assist the looser portions in setting. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road: Timber has been ordered for replacing the old culverts between mile pegs 3 and 4. Wainuioru Hiding, Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road: Contract No. 203, 18 chains cf metalling, was finished by the contract of tht; 15th of last month, together with an extra chain of metalling. East Coast Road: Building a roadman's cottage at Mutuwaireka. Tne work was practically finished on my visit of inspection on 27th ult., and the work showed evidence of good quality of workmanship. Blairlogie-East Coast Road: Contract No. 206, delivering 2,500 cubic yards of metal The contractor i 3 making steidy progress with the work. Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road: Contract No. 207: Some delay was occasioned starting this work, but the contractors are now on the ground, and are stripping the pit prepsratory to commencing the work. Masterton-Waimata Road: Taueru to Mungapakia section: Contract No. 208, delivering 1,300 cubic yards of metal. The contractor has started operations on the Northern end of his work from the rock quarries. Alfredton Riding. Alfredton-Weber Road: Tiraumea section, contract No 195 (L. and G.): The above work which is under maintenance will be taken off the con • tractors' hands on the 10th inst. Contract No. 210, one mile, more or less, of metalling was commenced on Ist inst., only three teams being then employed. I urged the contractor to comply with the specified number of ten teams to insure the completion of the work in dry

season. Castle Hill Road: Contract No. 171, 19 chains of formation (G.G.,) approaches to and from the Taueru Bridge, lhe above work, the completion of which has been some time in abeyance, is now taken off the contractor's hands. A balance of £7 (G.G.) has been utilised in providing culverts on former unfinished lengths on above road. l would recommend that the balance of the bridge loan be expended in painting and adjusting the structure. The survey of the Spring Hill road, for Castlepoint County, has been completed. Tawataia to Alfredton section: Contract No. 209, delivering 720 cubic yards of metal, let at last meeting is proceeding, about 200 cubic yards of metal having been delivered.
