TELEPHONE IMPROVEMENTS.

METALLIC CIRCUIT. REPLACES SINGLE-WIRE SYS- ! TEM. At the meeting of the County Council, yesterday, a leiter ws read from the Assistant Telegrapn Engineer, Post and Telegriphs Office, as follows: —I have been informed that proposals are at present before your Council to widen Lansdowne and Te Ore Ore roads, and operations will commence immeaiately. This will necessitate the removal of our present telephone lines on these roads in order that this may be done. The Post and Telegraph Department pro-, pose to replace the present singlewire system in Maaterton with the metallic circuit, and with this object in view it is desired that the work be put in hand at once so as to extend the advantages of the system to the exchange subscribers as early as possible. To introduce thib system it is propcsed to erect lead cables carrying the insulated leads, and it is specally desired that Lansdowne, le Ore Ore roads and Queen street, be the first routes to receive atten-

tion, being the main arteries in coine lien with the exchange connections. 1 may scarcely point uot that j the erection of expensive lead cables on the present line on Lanadowiie and ! Te Ore Ore roads is inadvisable, as the cable would be almost worthless if it had to be dismantled for road deviation purposes later on, and needless expense would be incurred. I would be glad to know if your Council would grant permission for the erection of the metallic circuit pole line on the edge of the footpath (which is, l understand, twelve feet wide) on the proposed new portion of the road on the Education Reserve grant. This would enable our Department to erect a separate line, and be prepared for road widening at any time in the future at much less ex- ' pense to all concerned, as the present j line could then be dismantled. Your I Engineer has kindly indicated the j route we would be required to follow, j and I would be glad if you could grant formal permission in order that the work may prnceed. The Chairman stated as the matter was urgent he had given his consent to the work.

On the motion of Cr Toogood, seconded by Cr Murray, the action of the Chairman was confirmed.
