KAITAWA NOTES. Saturday was an eventful day for Kaitawa and Tane, the occasion being the opening ceremony uf the Kaitawa Rifle Club. The large gathering present, including many ladies, gave evidence of the keen in terest that was taken in the Club, and the range, which is situated in an admirable spot on Messrs M. Caselberg's and George Ross' property, is a very good one, and the work of erecting the butts was carried out by an energetic working bee of members of the (Jlub. At the present time the Club have a membership of 25, 19 active and six honorary members, including ope activp lady members, Mrs D. Crewe, the Mayoress of Pahiatua. The ladies provided an excellent luncheon, after which Mrs D. Crewe fired the first shot from the 200 yards range, registering a bulls-eye. Mr D. Crew, the Mayor of Pahiatua, then declared the range open, and congratulated the Club on the splendid butts. Some people were inclined to laugh at rifle clubs, but the time would come when these clubs would be called upon to do active service. Mr Crewe stated that he understood the Government gave a club when starting 120 rounds per man. He would like to see the members get more than this, and in regard to the cost of rifles he thought the Government should sell them at cost price, and not make a profit on them, as thsy (the Government) were only our agents. Mr Andrew Knox, the President of the Club, welcomed the visitors xrom Pahiatua, and thanked Messrs Caselberg and G. Ross for the use of the ground. Teams were then picKi'd by the President and Club-Captain (Mr Dave Ross), and resulted in a win for the Captain's team, the scores being as follows: Captain's team ~C. Clifton 22, Graham 11, McCormick 18, roctor 16, D. Ross 17, Hughes 17, McDonald 14, J. Geurin 10, C. Manson 14, A. Stevenson 11, Holdsworth 14, W. Watts 8; toal 172.
President's team —W. McCardle 17, G. Burgess 3, F. Burgess 11, H. Ross 16, W. Ross 8, W. Stevenson 12, T. Guerin 11, Gray 10, Kelsey 11, Walden 10, A. Knox 2, C. Guerin 8; total 119. The Secretary of the Club, Mr Proctor, proved himself the right man in the right place, and the Club are indebted to Mr Mitcheil for a supply of totara for the butts. The Kaitawa Cheese Factory is now receiving about 800 gallons daily with an average test of about 3.8, the highest being 4,2. As this is Wie first season, the directors' are going ' steady, and are only advancing 9|d per lb of butter fat, but the only shipment that the Company, which is a co-operative one, has the returns of brought the splendid price of 56s per cwt.. and no doubt the shareholders will receive a handsoome bonus at the end of the present season. The shareholders are well satisfied with the results, so far obtained, and the supply next season is likely tc be largely increased., Some splendid turnip and rape crops are to be seen in the Mangaone valley, and the Kaitawa district generally is looking in 1 splendid condition, and the present season has been a splendid one for grass growing.
