Four German steamship lines are ffering to take cargoes to British South Africa from Southampton, Liverpool, London and Glasgow at 5s a ton beelow the British Conference Lines rates. The Germans start this retaliation for the Union Castle line loading steamers at Antwerp and Hamburg for East Africa. A fierce freight war is threatened.
