CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Monday. Miss Minnie White, who has been associated with the Clareville State School staff for the past five years as a pupil teacher, has been appointed relieving teacher at the school at Ballance, near Pahiatua, and leaves for her new duties tomorrow. Mr S. Sievers, who has been on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand's branch for some time, has been transferred to the bank's branch at Masterton. Mr Sievers i 3 at present enjoying his annual holiday leave. The heavy rain of the past few days has filled up the rivers in the neighbouring district, and this morning all low-lying land was under water; At Dalefield, near the railway crossing, where new metal has just been spread, the water was several inches deep across the road, and will seriously affect the work. Yesterday morning the service in St. Mark's Church was conducted by the Rev. H. T. Stealey, of the Hikurangi College, Clareville, and in the evening Mr J. M. Beechey officiated. The Rev. R. Young has been relieving the Rev. Mr Kempthorne, at Nelson, and together with his family, who have been spending a holiday at Day's Bay, is expected home this week.
Of late quite a number of Maoris have taken up their residence here, having purchased several properties within the Borough. I hear that several more families of them are to follow. Their attraction in Carterton is not known. The work of demolishing the halfburnt building in High street, formerly occupied by Mr C. N. Giles, was commenced to-day. The members of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade are practising for a shield, which they, have provided amongst themselves. There are four teams as under:—F. Jackson, W. H. Baillie, C.|Whyte, T. Skelley and
P. Reid(2), E. McKenzie, G. lVhson, R. Smith, J. Wallace, R. Cantrn; (3) N. McKenzie, N. Mar tin, C Sadler J. McGuinness, E. Mason; (4), H. McKenzie, J. McKenzie, C. Lee, A. Desmond. Mr Geo. A. Fairbrother, of Carterton, has been duly licensed as an auctioneer by the local Borough Council.
The Salvation Armv. as a token of appreciation of the local Fire Brigade's services, when their barracks was near destruction by fire, have given £2 to the Brigadt's funds, which is acknowledged with thanks. Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., has sent along a donation of a guinea. Young Fenton Butter, who was a successful candidate at the rece t Junior (Jivil Service examinations, has been appointed a pupil teacher at the Clareville School. The news that the Jersey Breeders' Association has decided to allot the Society's gold medal for the champion bull and :ow for the year to the Wairarapa Pastoral and Agricultural Society has been received here with a good deal of satisfaction. The public schools in this district are opened this morning. Beastly weather prevsiled, and in many cases spoilt the attendance.
The appearance of the caterpillar pest has been felt in this district, especially by threshing mills who usually charge at per bushel. Recently one firm ran their machine for an hour and a-half, with eight men working, and at the end of that time had netted the munificent sum of 8s 6d. Now they run their machine by the hour, and charge for time, and not per buahel, where the crop is infested with the caterpillar pest. A Cairington settler recently had his garden garden robbed of its vegetables. It is a pity that the culprits could hot be caught and an example made of them. Orchard robbing is bad enough, but when it comes to vegetables it is certainly worse.
