THE KAIPARA.

THE ENQUIRY PROCEEDING. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 31. The Kaipara enquiry was resumed this morning. John Daniel?, of the Union Company, who examined the Kaipara, stated that her plates were ripped and bulged. . When soundings were taken the lead probably dropped straight ipto the sea. Frank Corbett; chief engineer, deposed that the vessel'sgheavy list was noticed while she was coaling at the wharf, efforts were made to straighten the vessel by putting as much coal as possible on to the portside. The list, however, still increased, and witness was worried about it, and questioned the second engineer, who assured him that the tanks were full in the bunkers. They had 4U tons of coal more on the port side than on the starboard, and on the deck about 80 tons more on the port than on the starboard side. He felt no bump as the vessel left the wharf. During the proceedings, Mr Kettle, S.M., commented on the fact that the Marine Department had taken no steps to locate the reported hidden shoal on the ronk on which it was alleged the vessel had struck. He said the Court could not close until it was supplied with full and accurate information on this point. The examination should be made by an independent party.
