THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, JANUARY 31, 1910. THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
It is apparent that the outlook for the frozen meat trade requires very careful consideration, and the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association could scarcely have employed itself more usefully than by taking the initiative steps to bring about a Conference of those interested in the trade. Frozen meat companies have for some time past experienced a period of anxiety, and in the past financial year quite a number of the companies had to record losses. The fall in values—to pretty well the lowest point on record —is accounted for by some authorities on the grounds of the financial crisis of 1907 in America, producing, naturally enough, a great curtail-
ment of the usual amount consumed I in Great Britain, and, secondly, the \ favourable season enjoyed by Australia, which enabled her to export considerably more than in any previous season. The present position of affairs is also rendered all the more critical by r&ason ot China having entertd the field. True it is that China does not export mutton and lamb, but this fact does not improve the situation, for the meats sent by China are ju3t as serious, as a matter of competition,as if they were mutton
and lamb. The Linley process of chilling beef means that larger quantities will be sent to the London market, and certain signs of increasing competition from countries other than Australia, are not wanting. It may be easy to account accurately | enough for the present fall in values, but it is. at the same time, undeniable that'much keener competition | Will have to be faced in the future | than has been experienced in the past. A conference of those interest;d in the trade should be able to make some valuable suggestions. In any case its deliberations will cer- ; tainly be of very considerable interest to large numbers of people in the Dominion.
