The Hon. G. C. Wade, Premier of New South Wales, who has been on a brief visit to 'Masterton, left by the train yesterday afternoon for the North.
Miss M. Skelley, formerly of the tsaff of the Carterton School, but now of the Training College, Wellington, has been appointed reileving teacher at Kaiwaewae School, near Peatherston. Miss Skelley enters upon her new duties on Monday next.
A Press Association telegram from New Plymouth announces the death of Mr Edward Okey, aged S2 years. Deceased was a very old settler. His son, Mr H. Okey, represents New Plymouth in the House of Representatives. Other sons are Lieu-tenant-Colonel Okey, and Messrs F. W. and A. Okey. s» «^3
The South Canterbury Education Board —says the "Press" —has ap- ' pointed Mr John Brown, of Glasgow, to the position of agricultural in* structor for South Canterbury, at a salary of £4OO per annum and travelling expenses. There were 53 applicants from the United Kingdom, America, Australia, and New Zealand Mr Brown is a highly qualified man, having gained the of Bachelor of Science (agriculture) and the diploma of £the National Agricultural Examining Board. He is a single man, 27 years of age, and is expected to take up his duties in three months' time.
With the death "of Robert William Lacy, at the Veterans" Home, Auckland, -there passed away, says tha 'Star,* one of the last of the seamen typical of Nelson's time. Lacy was born in 1824, and was present at the bombardment'of Beyrout, of Sve-' bourg, andjAlgiers. He tooK part in the capture of (Sevastopol, and saw service in the suppression of slave trading on the Gold Coast He was for some time in the Coastguard service, and after having seen twenty eight years' service in the Britistt Navy hecame to New Zealand with his wife Jand family in 1874 Sfnce thefdeath of his wife, which occurred five years since, he bad lived at the Veterans Home, where his simple and strong character endeared him to all The deceased was in receipt of the Greenwich Hospital special pension and of the old-age pension Among the tokens of respect sent were some |from the present ViceRegal party, and from the late Governor, Lord Ranfurly.
