PROSPECTING IN THE TARARUAS.
The Masterton Chamber of Commerce is to be congratulated upon the reception that it has accorded to the proposal to make an exhaustive prospect of the Tararua Ranges for sold and other valuable minerals. It is quite unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages that would accrue to this town if valuable discoveries were made, and even assuming that the result of the prospect amounted to nil, the cost, contributed to by many, would be but a mere bagatelle by way of loss to the individual, while the satisfaction of having come to a conclusion more or less definite regarding the possibility of minerals in payable quantities being found in che Tararuas would be worth the expenditure. The discussion on the question at the meeting held yesterday is reported in another column, and in connection therewith it seems to us that the suggestion of Mr Donald Donald is especially worthy of attention. Prospecting is not work that can be done thoroughly in a day nor in many days, as any one who is at all familiar with the nature of the work well knows. Mr Donald's suggestion waa that a scheme should be adopted that would provide for a prospect being continuously conducted for, say, a period of four or five years. It is to be hoped that the committee set up to go into the whole matter will give careful consideration to the view expressed by Mr Donald.
