PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter)
Friday. A wedding between a popular couple of this town is to take place in the Methodist Church to-morrow morning. The Forty-mile ;Bush Athletic Society will hold their annual meeting at Hamua on St. Patrick's Day, March 17th. At the annual meeting, the Society's balance-sheet showed a credi L , of over £26, which for a small country society must be considered highly satisfactory. Mr Robert Smiih, of Pahiatua, left by this morning's train for Wangaoui, to judge the wrestling events at the Wanganui Sports. Mr J. (J. Cooper, the President of the local A. and P. Association, states that he hopes to see a large entry of iat sheep at the inaugural Show, as he is firmly convinced that this district is an admirable one for fat sheep and fat-lambs, and in time to come will more than hold its own, on this side of the range as a fattening district.
During the past few years sheepfarmers in the Bush have realised the benefit of rape and turnips for topping off "fats," and cn account of the abundant growth of grass here, practically all the year round, a small plot of either turnips or rape, will fatten off a large quantity of sheep. Amongst those who were successful at Uie recent examination in Ma'sterton, for Matriculation and Solicitor's General Knowledge appears the name of Miss Kubina M. Wilton, a dughter of Mr H. R. Wilton, of Pahiatua. The Pahiatua Brass Band has gratuitously offered its services at the A. and P. Show on February 9tb. In addition to the usual sale of pigs, noultrv. horses, vegetables, etc., a large consignment of over 300 pairs of boots and shoes will be offered for sale at Messs Debrecency and Company's "Mart," to-morrow afternoon, the sale commences at 12,30 p.m. Messrs Horton, Ltd,, of -the Hawke's Bay and Pahiatua Nurseries, will, it is understood, have a large display in the Drill Hall on the occasion of the Pahiatua Show. Mention has been made before of the Pahiatua Amusement Club's credit balance of £2O, which has been lying idle for some considerable time. Owing to laxity L in matters connected with athletic sports there does not appear to be the least chance of again holding a sports gathering here, at least not until we get some more interested "sports" in the town. It has been suggested by several of the promoters of the Amusement Club that the money be donated to the Pahiatua Brass Band, who are practically a self-support-ing institution, and require all the assistance they can possibly get. A* the present time, owing to lack of funds, they have not a proper room to practise in, and therefore cannot give the pubilc the class of music they would like to. A town without a band is indeed a dull place, and so far our bandsmen have always obliged the public wherever uossible. The suggestion seems a very good one, arid as Pahiatua is the centre of a rapidly growing district, a good band will considerably help to enlivtn and benefit the town. Good entries have been received for the Jersey classes in connection with the Pahiatua A. and P. Show on February 9th, Messrs W. Howard Booth (Wairarapa), A. Buchanan (Manawatu) and A. Eddie (Mangahao) ea"h sending in numerous entries. For the horse events, up to the time of writing over one hundred entries have been received.
