CRICKET.
A correspondent writes:—For some reason, not quite clear to the cricketing fraternity, the Thursday Association matches yesterday did not take place. The pitch on the Park Oval —at least the Rival-Carlton pitch —was in playable order by 3 o'clock, and several of the Rivals and nearly all the Carlton players were on the ground expecting to continue their match, when they were informed that all matches had been postponed. Neither the secretary of the Carlton Club, the captain of the same Club, and the secretary of the Rivals,' knew aynthing of the postponement, and I understand the chairman of the Association was in a like position. Now, what we cricketers would like to know is who is responsible for this position of affairs, and is there an Association to control matters? Is this farce to be allowed to go on? If it is we shall not finish the matches this year. Of course, we nre all aware that cricketers cannot play unless it is dry enough to allow of carpet slippers being brought into use to wear, and I would suggest that the Association frame a rule to the effect that seeing that cricketers are made of sugar and are liable to melt, no match be played if rain has fallen within twenty miles of Masterton within three days of such match; also, that each cricketer be supplied with gum boots, an oilskin suit a•»! umbrella in case rain should threaten- to fall during the progress of a game.
