COMMENT ON THE VOTING. Received January 19, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, January 18. Unionist newspapers, commenting upon the course of the elections, recognise that a tremendous effort is still required to bring down the Government majority to anything like vanishing point. The "Daily Mail" says that no danger could be greater than that of the Nationalists holding the balance of power. Now is the time, says the "Mail," or all moderate men and wise Liberals to rally to the country. The naval Dorts have given them the lead. "The Daily Chronicle" says that up to the presant it looks like the ultimate Liberal majority exceeding that of Mr Gladstone in 1885. On or since 26th July last five deaths from heart failure, resulting from excitement at the elections, have been reported. Received January 19, 8.30 a.m. LuNDON, January 18. The largeness of the polls throughout the country is due in some degree to the mildness of the weather. Ten thousand Durham miners, dissatisfied with the agreement made by their agents with the coalminers respecting the eight hours in mines, demonstrated against Mr J. Johnson,, the Labour candidate for Gateshead, and rioted, in passing, one colliery, where they did much damage. To-morrow they will march against the Labour candidate for Bishop Auckland.
