THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 1910. THE RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.

The deliberations of the Conference of Chambers of Commerce, which recently sat in Masterton, will, apparently, have an abortive result. Judging from the account of an interview, published elsewhere in this issue, which a Wellington "Post" reporter has had with the Minister of Railways, the latter appears to be getting tired of "representations" from Chambers of Commerce. Discussing the last conference we remarked, inter alip, "It is, we think, scarcely likely that the Minister will accede to all the resolutions arrived at. The deliberations of previous conferences do not seem to have had any very appreciable effect on the Minisj terial mind, and the past shows that conferences may urge alterations that are not, sometimes, advisable, as, for instance the 10 o'clock p.m. train from Masterton to Cross' Creek. It ! appears now to be generally admitted that no one wants the train in question, and there is some doubt Jjisi to whether it is actually axle grease or not. The result of the representation al regard to running that train is that Masterton has been deprived of its early morning train for the North. We venture to remark that the alterations which Masterton and the Forty Mile Bush districts really require more than any other are (1) a train for the North from Masterton at 6.30 a.m., and (2) the ! train from Wellington, arriving here at 8 o'clock p.m., to run on to the 1 Bush district. If the district were to <

concentrate itself, upon obtaining! these concessions, at any rate, for a start, we are of opinion that there would be more prospect of getting some improvements in the service effected than by urging a large number of alterations, which amount to something approaching a re instatement of the old service." For various reasons, which we need not enter into in detail, we have taken the view that there was not the slightest prospect of the Minister re- ! instating the service, which previously existed. Owing to the Government having acquired the Manawatu line, and by reason of the frequently stated intentions of the Minister that he would not run trains when there was nothing to carry, we cannot see how he could be expected to comply wit! the long list of resolutions passed, Mr Millar now says, if he is correctly reported, '"lt is no good Chambers of Commerce carrying resolutions because this time-table was compiled to suit the requirements of the various districts on the representations of the Chambers of Commerce." Whether Mr Millar will make any alterations at all remains to be seen, though it would appear that he will again consider the time-table at the end of the present month. We believe that the Mastertun Chamber of Commerce could make more adequate and successtul representations in regard to alterations which this town dofes need, and which we venture to say it is justly entitled to, than by joining in conferences which, on the face of things, do not appear tu be a success.
