LORD KITCHENER.

To the Editor. Sir.—With reference to your long article re Kitchener. Having been in South Africa during the Boer War I should like to remark I never met a man to whom K was more than a hard, brutal martinet, ready tj sacrifice everything for his own ends. As to 'stil] mouth,' a man did not dare offer a remark concerning a 'waster officer' without the likelihood of being the victim of court martial. Hard, cold, cruel, were the mildest terms employed by Tommies and Colonials alike. To hear K praised is more nauseous to a right minded man than to witness the adoration the French nation still offer to the shrine of that champion of all butchers and murderersNapoleon. Get the opinion of any returned Australian trooper of the man who expected a soldier to slave like a horse, and die like a dog.—l am, etc. EX-CONTINGENTER. Kaituna, Jan llth. 1910. (Many New Zealanders who served in the South African war speak in terms of the greatest admiration and respect of .Lord Kitchener. Our correspondent is of courße, entitled |u his opinion.—Ed. W.A.)
