W. Hogg's resignation on June 18th last. The Hon. T. Mackenzie entered Parliament in 1887 as the representative of Clutha He represented New Zealand at the Centennail celebrations in New South Wales in 1888, and in 1899 went to Great Britain as New Zealand Trade Commissioner. For three years subsequently be represented various New J Zealand exporters in London thus gaining a valuable insight into the methods of dealing with colonial produce. Twice he has served on Royal Commissions —in 1894 upon the Tariff Commission, and in 1901 on the Education Commission. Local affairs have received a considerable amount of attention from him, and his early explorations in the Milford Sounds, Te Anau, lVlanapouri, and West ! Coast disrtrjets were of consideiable interest and value. For his contributions to the knowlsdge of these then almost inaccessible areas he was made a tellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1898. He join- 1 ed th? At that time he was given control of the Industries and Commerce and Tourist Departments, and Scenery Preservation, his appointment as Minister of Agriculture being announced in May.
