There was a good attendance, and the racing track was in good order. Proceedings commenced with the Hack Hurdles, for which there were six starters, and the previous day's winner Windage was made a pronounced favourite. The latter and Nightmare cut out the running for over a mile and a quarter, when Gold Bird moved up. Entering the straight he had the measure of the leaders, and coming on won nicely by a length from Nigtmare. This was Gold Bird's first appearance over hurdles, and he was very capably handled by A. MsConnon. Five went oat for the Stewards' Handicap, and Cyrene was the popular fancy. A good race from the top of the straight resulted in Purakau winning by a head from Te Ru, with Cyrene a head away third and Thera close up. Adria failed to start and took no part in the race. The small field of four contested the Newmarket Hack. Solash held off, but was steadied, and Conqtiestina led to the home turn. Splash then came away and won by over two lengths ftom Amaru. The withdrawal of Pukewai left only four in the Mangahao Welter, and of these Waihola who was not near the barrier was left at the post, and took no part in the contest. Chase Mab at once took up the running, and never being caught won by two lengths from the favourite, Debonnaire. Tyrannic, who appears to have lost his pace on the flat, was a bad last. Backers of Waihola in this race and Adria in the previous one were loud in their complaints of these horses being left at the post. Another quartette contested the Racing Club Handicap. Parable led from the start, until reaching the far turn, where Adria took up the running, and led into the straight. Halfway down Milan was brought through, and won a nice race by a 1 length from Adria. i Four lined up to the barrier for the Makuri Hack and Blend was made a strong favourite.
