MASTERTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
The monthly meeting of the Mas terton District High School Committee was held last evening. There were'present Messrs R. Brown (chairman), A. Hendry, E. H. Waddington, H. J. O'Leary, T. J. Thompson, and C. Perry. c * The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club wrote asking the Committee to make their own arrangements in connection with tha school events at the forthcoming carnival. The chairman, and Messrs Perry, Thompson and Heudry were appointed to act in the matter. The Education Board wrote in re- j gard to the Bible Reading in Schools, J pointing out that the Education Act, I section 143b, directs that instruction in school hours shall be entirely secular in character. The Board s regulations provide that each school day shall be of five hours' duration, and that therefore under the Act and regulations religious instruction cannot be given within the five hours' school time mentioned. The Minister for Education wrote actnowledgin? the receipt of the letter in connection with the time table arrangements and stating that it was the practice of the Department 'hat representations should be made through the Education Board to whom the committee was referred.^ The Treasurer's statemnet showed: —Balan.e last month £64 15s Bd, total £74 10s 1 d, payments £l9 19s 9d; credit balance a>s4 :i-" 2d, less .unprtf-C" fo ' f heuu" £«
