QUESTION OF RESUMING WORK.

| BALLOT OF SOUTHERN MINERS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegarph Copyright, Received January 11, 9.40 a.m. SYDNEY, January 11. The ballot of the Southern miners on the question of resuming work commences to-day. Some of the miners are making preparations for a start,in the event of the decision proving favourable. The Miners' Delegate Board at Newcastle has decided to ask Mr Paterson to show cause why he should not be expelled from the Federation for accepting a seat on the Compulsory Wages Board. Received January 11, 10 p.m. SIDNEY, January 11. On Mr P.Bowling's application, the Industrial Court adjourned the hearing of the charges against Bowling, Butler, anq O'Connor, to Monday, on the ground that owing to the work in conection with preparing the miners' ballots, the defendants had not had time to prepare their case. Received January 11, 11 p.m. NDEY, January 11. The first shipment off foreign coal for the Government is expected tomorrow. In order to ovecome the difficulty of unloading through the coal lumpers being on strike, the Railway Commissioners have constructed a number of Priestley grabs, each capable of raising three ton from ships hold at one lift.

BRITISH MINERS

ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND IDLE.

Received January 11, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, January 10. A hundred thousand Northumberland and Durham miners are idle owing to the dispute with 'the colliery owners over the working of the Elhgt Hours Act. Three thousand have been persuaded to resume work. Received Janaury 11, 11 p.m. LONDON, January 11. A mass meeting of Northumberland miners at Seghill unanimously favoured a general stoppage of work.
