AUCKLAND DEFEATS CANTERBURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January j.O. The second attempt this season to wrest the Plunket Shield from the grasp of the Auckland Cricket Association has failed, the Canterbury team being beaten by seven wickets. When heavy rain fell on Saturday night and yesterday it was thought Auckland might have some difficulty to make the runs required, but this was done to-day on a wicket which was rapidly improving, at a cost of three wickets. Canterbury carried their second innings score to 238 before being dismissed. Carlton carriad his bat through the innings from tine first wicket down, making 88. Auckland knocked up the rans required (104) in 84 minutes. The finish was sensational. With 92 on the board Hem us hit two successive deliveries from Orchard clean, over the boundary, thus finishing the game. He scored 45 not out. The scores were as follow: CANTERBURY.
