PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Friday. A meeting of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society will be held on Monday evening, to wind up matters in connection with the recent sports gathering. A start has been made with the improvements to the Farmers' Association yards recently decided upon by the Association. The saleyards have had a spell during the holidays, but the hammer will be wielded again on Tuesday next, at the P.F.A. yards, when the three firms operating in this district will conduct sales. Lodge Pahiatua, U.A.0.D,. met last evening, Bro. J. Swiggs, A.D., presiding, when ordinary routine lodge business was transacted. A social is to be held in the Hamua Hall this evening. Responding to the toast of the "Directors of the Ballance Dairy Company" the other evening, Mr H. Hirst, one of the Directors, stated that all the Directors were milk suppliers on a fairly large scale, and that the suppliers' interests were their interests. He hoped that at the end of the present season that the suppliers would still be able to sine: ■('The* are jolly good fellows.'*, _ v,A little over twelve months ago the idea of holding an agricultural aud;p'astdral show in Pahiatua was mooted, >Mr J. H. Richardson, who so ably represented the Jfahiatua Chamber of Commerce at Masterton the other clay, being one of the first to make such a suggestion. In a little over a month's time, February 9th, the first show of the PahiatuaAkitio A. and P. Association is to be hf Id, and in conversation with the secretary to-day, he informed me that the entries for the various events were coming in beyond expectations, and keen interest was being evinced in the forthcoming show, especially by the country residents. To-morrow Mr Walsh is makin a journey to Palmerston in the interest of his society, and it is safe ,to predict that visitors to the show will be well catered for.

Every evening during the past week, lovers of the favourite summer pastimes, bowls and tennis, have been making good use of the bowling green and tennis courts. The bowlers who are representing Pahiatua at the bowling tournament in Wellington next week have been putting in some hard practise, and should give a good account of themselves. Mr Durham, an old resident of Mangatainoka, died last night. The deceased had reached the age of 80. For the quarter ending December 31st, 1909, 32 births, 8 marriaes and 10 deaths were registered in Pahiatua. Mr Pagett left to-day to take up his duties at Franklin. His successor at the Scarborough creamery, Mr G. Keast, was formerly in the employ of the Rangiwahia Dairy Company. During the. past years the bee keeping industry has not progressed much in this district; and it is only of late that the industry has been worked to advantage here. Apiarists state that there is good honey obtainable in this district, but what they have to contend with i,s the unsettled spring weather. Once through the spring, the bees seem to do remarkably well. Those havi.ng colonies of bees to dispose of will find an advertisement of interest on page 1 of this issue. DAIRY NOTES. That the Pahiatua district is still climbing to the top of the ladder in connection with the dairying industry is plainly seen by the fact that on the 15ht inst. the Ballance Company will pay out to its suppliers the large sum of £7,900 for Decern - bre's milk supply. This amount is at the rate of lOd per lb of butter fat, and it is worthy of note that, notwithstanding opposition in the shape of cheese factories started "this season, the amount for a similar period of last season was about £6OO below this sum. The Umutaroa Cheese factory near Dannevirke. is turning out a litMe over a ton of cheese daily.
