GOLD IN THE WAINGAWA VALLEY?
How many are there in the Wairarapa who have again and again turned their eyes towards the Rimutaka range mentally asking, ."is there gold in the ranges—is there anything there that is worth prospecting for?"' Opinion may differ and continue to differ until the present generation and seven subsequent generations have passed away, but practical effort only will yield the answer that will be accepted. Is there any reason for supposing that there may be rich mineral deposits in theWaingawa valley and other parts of the Wairarapa? As a matter of fact there is, but inquiry elicits the information that no very systpmatic, or thorough, or extensive prospect has ever been made. Brief, however, as some previous prospects have been the results obtained were of a more or less encouraging character. Then there is this point to be borne in mind, that the present day methods of dealing with various minerals, are of a much more scientific and satisfactory character than prevailed in days gone by. Science has made rich mines of properties, the owners of whicli a generation ago would have despaired of working successfully. But this is proceeding apace and wandaring ahead of the matter under discussion. There are those in this town and district wlm are anxious that a thorough prospect of the Waingawa Valley shoulri be made and the proposal really seems to be worthy of some consideration. The project is certainly of an interesting character, while of course if any mining industry were established in the vicinity of Masterton the town would gain incalculably. The expense of making a fairly prospect would not be very much. Probably £2OO would satisfy the curiosity of all concerned and then there is the possibility that great advantage might accrue from the undertaking. If a prospecting company of say some forty subscribers of £5 each could be formed the work would be carried out to the satisfaction of all interested. We have been approached from several quarters in regard to giving some publicity to the proposal and in accordance with our unvarying policy of finding space for the discussion of any project
likely to be of benefit to the town and district we have pleasure in drawing attention to the possibilities of the scheme.
