PAHIATUA NEWS.

From Our Resident Reporter. j Tuesday. j The Pahiatua County Council will | meet on Saturday next. | 1 understand that Mr -Page:, for j several years manager of the Scar- , borough creamery, has accepted a j position in a bacon factory in the : Auckland district, and laaves shortly ■ ; to take up his new duties. j Mrs Vile, a well-known figure in \ this town, and who is nearing her 93rd year, is at present on a holiday trip to Wellington. Mr G. Hawley-Drew, the secretary of the Pahiatua Racing Club, will be in attendance in connection with race matters daily from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Commercial Hotel, until the races, with the exception of Fri day afternoon next. The new arrangement for the carrying of mails which took effect j on January Ist. gives a daily mail to Rongomai, Tane, Kaitawa, and Mangaramarama. Before this date the above places only had mails delivered three times a week. The schedules for the first annual show of the Pahiatua-Akitio A. and • P. Association are now being issued, and copies may be obtained from the secretary, Mr J. A. Walsh. The schedule is worth ' ■■>* :'•',' ;ud for an opening show some splendid prize, are being offered. The Horticultural and industrial sections are also well catered for, and these exhibits will be shown in the Drill Hall on the Bth and 9th February. During the past few days lovers of bowls have had quite ' an exciting time on the local bowling green. Yesterday, the feather holders who staved off all opposition on Saturday last were'again challened by Messrs H. Pearcey, J. W. Mills, T. P. Wills and F. Storey (skip). The challengers were outclassed from tne first head > and were easily disposed of by 28 to 17. The holders consist ot Messrs J. Hughes, Osburne-Lilly, W\ H. Hawkins and T. Hewat (skip) Mr J. A. Walsh playing substitute for Mr Os-burne-Lilly on both days. A pairs match between. Messrs Norton and ' Walsh (skip), and Mills and Pearcev (skip) resulted in the former being badly beaten. This was the surprise of the day, as both Norton and Walsh showed excellent form in games earlier in the day. KONINI NOTES. The milk supply at the butter factory is still keeping up well, and on . an average 81 "boxes of butter is manufactured daily. The tests are showing a good increase. On New Year's Eve, a gig containing three young men was smashed to pieces near the blacksmith shop, tne 'horse taking exception to a motor car that was passing at a lively pace, and "playing up." Luckily the young men escaped with a severe shaking. The busy haymakers have in most cases got their h3y under safe cover, and some excellent crops are reported. A few loads of metal are required on the Bridge Road, past the Konini railway station. The social held in the Hall last evening, and inaugurated by the ladies, was a splendid success, and the best heid in the Hall for some considerable time. Refreshments were supplied by the ladies, and the energtic secretaries, Misses F. Hirst and K. Bissett, worked very hard. A good sum will be handed over to tbe Hall Committee. The floor was perfect and dance music was supplied by Mesdames W. Britland and Peterken, and Misses E. Bissett, N. Wal- j den and N. Dempsey, while the ,Misses H. Reeve (Wellington), E. Bissett and Walden were heard to advantage in vocal items. Mr R J. Smith acted as M.C. The residents about here are very wrath at not getting a daily mail ,from Wellington. For years past, even in the old coaching days, a mail was received daily from Wellington, and now owing to new arrangements this mail is not received '. until the day following. Even the late mail from Wellington to Masterton cannot come down from Pahiatua as heretofore, owing to the very late hour that the first train on the fol lowing morning, arrives in Pahiatua, the mailman having to leave Pahiatua about an hour and a half before its arrival. It might be mentioned 'that the first train north from Masterton, which before the new timetable came in to force, did the jour-

ney in two and a quarter Hours, now takes over three hours for a short journey of forty miles.
