Mrs Jotm Croucher, who died at , Napier, last week, was the mother ( oi Mrs C. G. Aitken, who was lately resident in Mastercon. Mr Percy Lee, who is confined to : the Masterton Hospital, suffering from an internal complaint, underwent another operation yesterday. He is progressing as favourably as can be expected under the circumstances. Mr J. E. Thwaites, formerly on the teaching staff of the Masterton District High School, and now first assistantat th Clyde Quay Schuol, Wellington, is spending a brief holiday in Masterton at present A telegram received Jast night from Christchurch states that Archdeacon Averill, Bishop-elect of Waiapu, and Mrs Averill, bade good-bye to the parishioners of S. Michaels at a garden party in the afternoon. There was a very large attendance, and advantage was taken of the opportunity to present the Archdeacon Averill with a gold episcopal ring and domestic silverware on behalf of tl:e clergy of the diocese. An accompanying address stated that the parishioners desired to avail themselves of the opportunity of expressing their sincere personal esteem and (appreciation of Archdeacon and Mrs Averill's faithful and devoted work, 'and at the same time hopes are entertained of him, and he had their earnest wishes for his fsuccess under Almighty God in the high sphere of work to which he had been called. In acknowledging the address, Archdeacon Averill stated that he had received a bank slip for £l7O as a small token and appreciation and affection from the parishioners and members of the congregation. On Ist January, Lord and Lady Plunket will leave Palmerston North, Lady Plunket going to Ruanui to spend a fortnight with her children \ whilst the Governor is on a fishing expedition. They will return to Wellington later on, and be in the capital for two weeks or so before ' her Excellency sails on the ! February. After Lady Plunket's de- : parture the Goverr,or will visit the : West Coast of the South Island. ' stopping at the principal towns, and will return to Wellington in time for j J th« election (on Ist March) of next i year's Rhodes Scholar. Almost im-

His future movements are not at present definitely settled, but the Governor expects to be travelling through the country during the greater part of Mirch, April and May, making Wellington his headquarters. Lord Plunket will not be leaving New Zealand until next May or June, arid as he will spend the whole of the remainder of his term jin office travelling, he will have no further use for his horses and carriages, which are to be sold by auction.
