THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
MR DtNNIE RESIGNS.
NO SUCCESSOR TO BE APPOINTED. By Telegraph - Press Association, WELLINGTON, December 22.
' The Premier, in the House to-day, announced that Mr Dmnie's resignation as Police Commissioner will accepted. He will receive-six pay. It is not intended to appoint; another Commissioner. The Department will b3 managed by Mr F. Waldegrave, Under-Secretary for Justice. Later a Chief Inspector will be appointed under Mr Waldegrave. Speaking on the subject the Premier said there was nothing to show that there was any foundation f°r the charges against Mr Dinnie, as it was felt the duties of his office were of such an important nature, and in the interests of the public should be carried out without friction, Mr Taylor; (Chrstchurch) said the Commissioner's integrity was never in'question, but his ability was. In Mr Waldegrave the Dominion had a fine public servant whose appointment would.previant the heart-burning that would ha/e resulted if a police officer had been arp inted.
