WASTING THE BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.
DISCUSSION IN THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A NUMBER OF PROSECUTIONS. At the meeting of the Borough Cuuncil last evening, the Borough Engineer (Mr W. T. Mansfield) reported on the manner in which the Borough water supply was being wasted by ratepayers on their gardens. The Inspector, had been making careful investigation into the matter, andfthe result was that six informations were ready to be executed. He thought it was his duty to brine the matter before the Council. Cr Pauling held that if the water was not used indiscriminately there would be plenty of it. It was quite time that the by law was enforced. The Mayor said there was no harm in using the water when it was abundant. There was, however, no excuse for people who used it in the night time. Cr Elliott put in a plea for, the gardens, but he,had no consideration for anyone who wasted the water. Cr Pauling referred to those who tied the garden hose to a tree art d allowed the water to run all night. Cr Elliott moved that the prosecutions be withheld. The Borough Engineer said that if a few people were made an example of in the matter it would have the effect of making others more careful.. Cr Morris expressed pleasure at the discussion. The water had been wasted, and it was high time action was taken He moved as an amendment that the summonses be issued. Cr Rigg, in seconding the amendmen, said that while there were those who were conscientious in the usage of the water, there were others who wasted it. A few prosecutions would have the effect of checking extravagance. Or Morris' amendment was then put to the meeting and carried.
