THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. FRIDAY. DECEMBER 17, 1909. THE TRAIN SERVICE.

} We understand that the question of 1 the Wairarapa train service will be discussed at the meeting of the Masterton Chamber of [Commerce this afternoon. That the Minister will make no immediate alteration may be taken for granted, but if reasonable argument is advanced for advantageous changes [the Minister will, no doubt, agree to such suggestions. If, however, proposals that involve heavy expense, with nd adequate return in the way of revenue are going to be submitted, the Chamber would be more profitably occu- . pied in discussing means for promot- I ing the general prosperity of the district. There is one alteration that certainly should be made—no extra expense is involved in it—and that is the first train northwards from Masterton should start at least one hour and-a-half earlier than at present. From Dannevirke to Masterton a petition to this effect could easily be secured, and would, we believe, obtain Ministerial attention. The first train from Masterton northwards is used largely by members of auctioneering firms, and buyers at stock sales. At present such pas • sengers arrive, even at Pahiatua, too late to transact business conveniently. and as to reaching Dannevirke —well, it is out of the question in time to attend stock sales. The importance of the auctioneering business in this district is well-known, and is certainly very familiar to several members of the Chamber. Without going fully into the whole question of the railway service and the needs of the district, we would suggest (hat an important alteration in the respect mentioned could be obtained if a proper representation is made to the Minister.
