CARTERTON NEWS.
From Our Resident Reporter. Wednesday. The United Friendly Societies' Council met last evening, in- the Foresters' Hall, Bro. W. H. Partridge presiding. The delegate at the Wellington Council forwarded a report of the proceedings of the last two meetings of the Council. The secretary to the combined picnic forwarded particulars as to fares, the return being 2s for adults, and Is for children under twelve. It was decided to suggest that the Railway Department be again asked to delay the time for the return train to leave Pigeon Bush from 4.30 to any time between 6 and 8 p.m., as the time at present fixed was considered far too early.
A fine mob of fat bullocks passed through Carterton tihs morning, on their way to the freezing works. ' Several individuals bearing an un--1 desirable appearance, who had been loitering around the town during the past day or bo, were "moved on" this afternoon by the guardians of [ the peace. I On Monday evening next the annual distribution of prizes in connection with St. Mark's Sunday School will take place in the schoolroom. Following are the local rinks to piay Greytown to morrow for the Booth Cup:-Fisher, Baillie, McJPhee, Keid; Roydhouse, Downard, Biah, King; Whyte, Lightfoot, G. Leach, and Moore. At last night's meeting of the Carterton United Friendly Societies Council, the annual report of the Wellington United Friendly Societies' Dispensary Board was read. It stated, inter alia, that the membership at the present time is 4,098, as against 3,610 at the end of last year, so that there has been an in- | crease of 488. During the year the Jbccefcwr the dispensary, thus adding 433 new members to the roll as at the [end of the year. Foi the twelve months the number of prescriptions dispensed to members was 32,838, ait average of 8.1 per member. Members will see that this means nearly 90 prescriptions daily, including Sundays. Last year the prescriptions were 30,306, the average per member being 8.7, or a little higher than for the present j year. i'he cash sales for the year j show a decrease when compared with 1908; the figures beng 1908, £1,1991 9s sd; 1909, £1,150 31s 9d. As will be seen from the profit and loss statement the gross profit for the j year is £2OB- 18s sd, and deducting £l7 08 6d and £lO 9s 3d, written off shop'fittings and shop furnishings for depreciation, leaves a net profit of £lßl 8s Bd. A portion of this j amounting to £ls 2s 6d has to be taken in payment of the annual con- J trifiutlon to the Cash fiegisier Re- ( serve Fund, and we recommend that a further bum of £45 16s 3d, be divided among the shareholders as | a dividend at the rate of 6 per j cent., leaving £l2O 9s lid to be carried forward. Last year our gross profit amounted to £256 14s 7d, and the reduced amount this year has been brought about by the reduction in the cash sales, and by the increase in the general expenses on account of certain alteration, which had to be made in the internal arrangements of the shop. The item in j the balance sheet "sundry debtors" £SO 9s Id may appear somewhat large, but it includes a sum of £4O which we expended on alterations to the shop, and which is to be refunded to us next March. It was decided by the Board that the levy for the current year be the same as last, viz., 6s per member.
