THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1909. THE STATE COAL-MINERS.
The Government appear to have managed very badly in their dispute with the State coal-minera. It was understood the other day that the miners' demands were of a character which it was quite impossible to agree to. Figuratively speaking, the Premier's "back was against the wall," and whatever the consequences might be the Government were not going to yield to the proposal* made. Mr Semple, President of the Miners' Federation, however, intimated that if the Government did not take action quicklv (meaning thereby, we assume, that if the State coal workers' demands were not complied with) that Sir Joseph Ward would be knocked a complete somersault, and Mr Semple really appears to have known more about the situation than either the Premier or the Minister in charge of the mine. After all, the row it appears to have been discovered that the miners are asking for nothing more than justice, and, fortunately, for them I hey seem to be strong enough to force the Government to deal justly with turn. Those who desire to see the Government of t'ie Dominion carried on in a dignified and proper manner, and without unnecessary loss being occasioned to a»iy portion of the community, will regret that thj true position was not clear to the Premier at the commencement of the struggle. As the result of the conference between the Premier and his colleague, the Minister for Mines,"and the Miners' Fed .nation delegates, an assurance had been obtained that the Minister for Mino will himself visit the mine after the s:>ssion, and will inquire into everything alleged by the delegates with a view to giving the men at Point Elizabeth conditions not less favourable than those now obtaining at thi mines. It seems only just that similar corditiona of employment should prevail at the various mines, and that State
miners should be as favourably treated as those working in other miii 63.
