UPLIFTING THE MAORI.
Testimony to the improvement in the condition of the Maoris on the West Coast of the North Island was given by the Rev. T. G Hammond to the Methodist District Synod held at Wanganui lecei.tly Mr Hammond stated that their condition, generally speaking, was most hopeful, and that the contrast between their present state and their state a few years ago afforded great reason for thankfulness. It was encouraging to see thst there was more disposition to engage in farming and dairying puri suits, and to recognisa the impurtance jof education for their children. One of the deaconesses engaged in work I amongst the Maoris gave instances of the baneful influence of tohungaiam which still prevailed. She had been told by many educated Maori women that the work of uplifting the Native race would be very much handicapped until a system of registration of births, deaths and marriages was in operation.
