ESSAY COMPETITION. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 7. The secretary of the British and Foreign Saibrs' Society, London, has forwarded to the Education Department the results nf the Essay Competition on "Captain James Cook, his voyages and discoveries', and their value to the nation, commerce and C^risMaiity." McClurg, Waitaki Boys' High School, Oar.-.aru, j pnd Johanna M. tirusnai, District | High School, Lawrence, Otago. | There were 78 competitors from I New Zealand, a largtr number, says | the secretary of the Society, than j that for the whole of Australia. | Essays were sent in bv children in Great Britain, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Each successful competitor will be presented with a plaque composed of copppr taken from the "Victory" and other famous battleships. When notifying the results the secretary also says that the New South Wales essays were as a whole of the highest merit, and that tne South Island of New Zealand came second.
