FIRE AT FOXTON.
By Telegraph—Press Association. PALMERSTON N., December (5. Messrs Ross and Co.'s rope works at Foxton were totally destroyed by fire on Saturday. The works closed down at the usual time, but an hour and a-haif later a passer-by noticed flames issuing through one of the win dows at the opposite end ot the building from the machinery. In a few | minutes the building 'was completely enveloped in flames, and a'little later the roof collapsed. Within half-an-hour of the outbre&k the whole build-, totally destroyed, together with the machinery, valued at £lB- - which was to manufacture all classes of ropes and twines, The value of the property saved does not exceed £SOO. The fire will throw seventy hands out of work for a long period, owing'to the fact that it will be necessary to import new machinery from England. Fortunately, the direction of the wind and the work ot the bucket brigade resulted in the offices and a row of workmen's cottages being saved. The insurances were £5,100 on the stock, on the buildings. The loss is estimated at £7,000. The origin of the outbreak is a mys tery. i
