A COMING BATTLE.
The general election in Great Britain, which must now come as the result of the House of Lords rejecting the Budget, will be one of the most momentous contests that has ever occurred in the history of British politics. The Lords are unquestionably trifling with the constitutional functions of the House of Commons, and we venture to say that they will suffer keenly for the action that they have taken. The Lords are not possessed of any real desire to ascertain the opinion of the country on the Budget, but are actuated solely by class and party motives, and they hope to better the position i.i which they find themselves by provoking the political tornado on which they have determined. The Commons, however, are eager for the fray, and it remains to be seen whether the advice, tendered to the Lords by many of ; their friends, to forbear was not the wisest that they could have taken. ! The Government, it would certainly seem, will be returned with renewed strength and vigour, and after that operations against "hereditary rulers" will probably be commenced in deadly earnest, with astonishing effect, and to the general benefit of "Merrie England."
