LOSS OF THE HIPPALOS.
THE CAPTAIN'S NARRATIVE. By Telegraph—Press Association. PICTON, November 22, The local steamer Elsie arrived from Picton on Sunday afternion, with the mister and crew of *he wrecked barque Hippalos. Captain Thomas Norris, interview ed by a press reporter, stated that the barque, in ballast, left Timaru for Havelock on 17th November. Nearing Cape Campbell, a northwest gale hampered progress, and the barque took four days to reach Cloudy Bay. She anchored and reported to headquarters. A fresh start wa3 made on Thursday, but she had to go back through stress of weather. On Friday she left the bay at 8 p.m, and got off the Brothers at 7,30 a.m. on Saturday. After passing Cook's Rock, those on board looked anxiously for the guiding beacon of Jackson's Head light. I The weather was thick, and. there was no light. This caused uneasiness, and the ve«§el wag kepi up another point west by south. At 2.25 o'clock the man at the Jookout cried "ftard up!" and the helm responded, but the barque did not pay off quickly enough, and struck heavily on Walker's Rock. The ship was under easy sail at the time. He called all hands on deck, and ordered the boate to be got out in readiness, then went down below and found the water making freely in the bows. He made for Guard's Bank, and came to an anchor in ten fathoms of water. There was then 6ft ot water in the hold. , He burr.ed flare lights and rockets, and sent up aistress signals from th> time of striking till tl.e vtss.f anchored. The crew were anxious (to Jeave, as the barque hat) a big list to starboard, and ajj went ashore st Titirangi in boats The captiin sent the mate to get into communication with the outside world by telegraph or telephone, but faile J, Taej wf't. 1 not picked up till the following Burning. Whitton, Thimburn, C. Albertson, T. Fagan, S. Fletchar, and C. McGregor. The ship's papers aid some provisions and personal effects were taken ashore.
