SCARCITY OF TIMBER
Everywhere the consumption of timber is increasing, said Professor Somerville, in the course of'an address recently at the British Association. Great Britain has paid £27,000,000 for wood on the average of the five year 1904-1908 as com pared with £18,000,000 fir 1889-03. Germany pays £12.000.000 annually for imported timber. Sweden is overcutcing her forests to the extent of more than 100,000,000 cubic feet yearly, while Russian timber expwts are decreasing. In a few years' time the United States will not have enough timber ior her own wants. i'he growing scarcity of supplies of timber is clearly reflected in the prices on the world's markets. Thus in Great Britain the largest class of timber has risen in value 28 per cent, in the last fifteen years.
