In the Assembly Mr McGowen asked the ;Preroier if he would usa his influence and the influence of hia Government with the colliery owners torrent an open Conference, and filling ; such would he then try to obtain temporary possession of some of the mines and work them to meet the public requirements„ Mr McGowen added tnat if legislation was required be could guarantee the support of the Opposition. Mr Wade replied that the position was that the employers said the mines were open for the men to resume work. That involved no sacrifice of principle. If work was resumed u't was to ba hoped and expected that the owners' promiae of a conference would be ; given effect to. So long as the rnenwould not return to the mines they deprived the Government oi an opportunity of helping them. Work should be resumed as a basis of relief, and thtn a legal tribunal would be available to redress their grievances. He had taktn steps to empower himito fix a date where, on work would be resumed concurrently with the opening of the promised conference. The Lithgow Iron Weeks have closed, as a result of the coal strike, and three hundred men haive been fcnrown idle. Several more steamers haye been laid up in Sydney, and the JKurow, which arrived at Newcastle from sew Zealand to-day, has laid up there. MELBOURNE. NovemLer IS.. The Otis Engineering W-orks closed awing to the shortage of road. The wsterside workers will take a strike Fallot to-morrow. Received November 17, 1.20 a.m. SYDNEK, November 16. The wool',£ales have been postponed till the Jabour troubles have ended. Mr McGowen moved the adjournment of the Assembly to diseuss the question of nationalisation of sufficient colleries to supply public requirements.
