TftJRF NOTKS. (By "Zetland.") T After winning the Gladstone Welrter at ClareviMe on Tuesday last Rate was presented by his ,owner, Mr W. Coope r , to the trainer, Mr &. Knox. Over Kate Has hitherto ptoved rather difficult to train, as for a considerable time ha was not sound <eu)Ug4t to stand a strong; preparation. At present he appears to be sound enough, and the way in which he won his race proved his racing conditiou.

A likely candidate for racing honours that made its'first appear* ance under colours at Clareville was the Hotchkjss—MustelJa mare Shimose. Although very big in condition she ran very prominently in the Trial Handicap, and finished close to the dead-heaters, Te Utuatu and Happy New Year. The Dannevirk'e meeting will open on Wednesday, and is expected to be a successful gathering. Most of the country clubs'in the North Island this season are experiencing decreased totalisator turnovers, and those that have raised their prize money have consequently very little chance of coming out with a profit. By winning the Stead Memorial Cup at Riccarton on Saturday Bobrikoff to a certain extent made amends for his Cup failure the previous week. After competing in the big event he was allowed time to fresheu up, and was thus able to succesnfully cone with the opposition, some of which had competed in Monday and Wednesday's events, and were doubtless beginning to feel the effects of racing strain*

Thtonly 7,'airarapa horses engaged at Dannevirke on Wednesday are Aberration and Bonus.

It is probable that First Con3ul will be given a spell during the summer months.
