PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar Resident Reporter)

Finday,

VALEDICTORY. Despite the wet weather there was a tho rough representative gathering assembled in the Drill Hall last evening, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Walter Norrell and family. An additional presentation was made lo those already mentioned in this morning's paper, the receipient being Miss Norrell, who received a linndsime gold brooch from her lady friends, the presentation being made by his Worship the Mayor, Mr U. Crewe, who presided. The chairman made eulogistic reterences to the many ways in which Mr Norrell had helped and benefited the town. Rev. bpeer (chairman of the School Committee), Messrs Smith, and A. Reese, each referred to the many good qualities of the guests of the evening Mr Norrell felt it a difficult task to thank the residents of the Pahiatua district for the kind words, and tokens of esteem. H'e felt extremely pleased wiMi the presentations made to his wife and daughter and himself, and extended to all a hearty invitation to visit him at Te Aroha.

A good programme of mimical ant; vocal items were r endeivd, the following contributing:—Songs, Mes-dam--:S Burgess and Thorns (encored), Misseg Hannon, Burgess and L. Tullcck (encored), and Messrs J. W. Sturton, C. Mills, W. Eccleton and F. G. Milne. A double sword dance was well execute:! by Messrs T. W. Watts and W. Watts, the former also dancing a Highland fling to bag pipe music, supplied by Mr G. Mackay. The accompaniments for the singers were played by Miss Bureess j and Miss Cox. The hall was then cleared for 'dancing, which was kept going merrily until 2 am Good music Was played by Messrs C. Mills (piano), B. Mills (cornetl, and 0. Burt (volin), extras being kindly played by Miss Cox and Mr Manguson. Mr L, T. Herbert capably filled the position of M.C., and the refreshment department as in the hand 3of Mr A. East. The committee and the secretary (Mr J. A. Walsh), and treasurer (Mr G. A. Burgeas) deserve credit for the splendid manner in which all arrangements in connection with the function were carried out so successfully.

A FLOURISHING COMPANY. Notithstanding that several cheese factories lava started this year in the immediate vicinity of the Ballance Dairy Company's butter factor' ies and creameries, on the 15th inst., the large sum of £5,160 W.ll be paid out to the suppliers of the company for milk during October. This is at the rate of lid per lb of butter fat.

Toe Konini branch has two very large individual milk suppliers, Messrs Thos. Quirk and Thcs. Avery, both of whom are taking approximately 3,3001bs of milk daily to the factory. Aj; this factory considerable improvements have been effected of late, the floor of the separator room having been ferro-concreted and the inside of all the factory painted. The two pasteurisers are also of great benefit, and the manager, Mr D. Kelly, and the buttermaker, Mr G. Stone, consider this as being a great factor in the better class of butter that is being turned out ihis season. In respect to this, it will be noted that this year the Konini factory obtained first honours at the Carterton A. and P. Show, the factory at Ballance having to be content with second place, whereas th.9 position has usually been revu-jed. The pasteurisers are not yet installed at the factory in Ballance, they being only put in at Konini as a trial, and being so far a success. The company, for the benefit of their suppliers, are now taking orders for basic slag, and it is expected to indent something like 100 tons of high grade article, arriving here in March next. About 70 tons was imported for the farmers last year, and gave much satisfaction.

GENEKAL. In another column Mr Frank Gannaway notifies the residents of Pahiatua that he has opened luncheon rooms and a fiah business in premises lately occupied by Messrs Barrell and Early. Mr Gannaway has had four years" experience in this line, and twenty yeara' experience in the fish business. The supply of fish is

procured from the New Zealand Fish Supply Company, Napier, who are very large wholesale suppliers. Small goods, including pork goods and other lines, will also be stocked. Mr Gannaway's experience in this line should stand him in good stead in this town. 1 understand that Mr and Mrs Noirell will leave for the North on Monday morning. Had they been staying in Pahiatua they would have celebrated their silver wedding here on Tuesday next. A batch of four inebriates were brought before Mr J. D. Wilson, J.P.. this morning. Three were convicted and discharged, and the other was fined 20s or 48 hours' imprison ment. The proposed amendments to the Licensing Act, as reported in this morning's Age, was the subject of much discussion by both parties here to-day. Mr Arnold Weston was the only candidate nominated to fill the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of MrNorrelJ. Messrs P. C. Debreceny and Co. "will sell pigs, poultry and general produce at the "Mart" to-morrow, commencing at 1 p.m. STOCK MARKET, Measrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd.. report on their spring cattle fair, held yesterday, as follows: Cattle came forward in excess of advertised numbers, over 2,100 being yarded. The quality and condition of all the classes of stock was exceptionally good, and this, coupled with the fact that we had a large number of buyers from the Wairarapa, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and surrounding district?, enables us to report a record sale for the district.
