TARATAHI-CARIERTON RACING CLUB. ! (By "Zetland.") The annual meeting opened yesterday under lair weather condition, but during the afternoon, the wind raged with considerable force, and to a certain extent affected the plea sure of the gathering. The attendance was large and representative, and speculation per meuium of the to!ali3ator and bookmakers was brisk throughout, the sum ot £5,960 being put through the machine. Some of the despatches were of an erratic nature, bul nevertheless the racingwas decidedly interesting, and some of the finishes fairly close. The officials had their duties well in hand, and the Secretary, Mr J. B. Bairstow, carried out his secretarial work most capably. Racing opened with the Hack Hurdles. On recent form Silken Rein was the popular selection, but she rin a very poor race, and Diplomatic had no difficulty in scoring from Kelsa. The Menschikoff-St. Amy gelding, Undecided, was made a firm favourite for the Belvedere Hack; but there was plenty of backing fo: Swallow, N . Trum-H and Leahora. No Trumps, well ridden by W. H. Leapuki was in front for two furlongs, and then the favourite, Composed, took up the running. Vite joined issue entering the straight, but Cairns rnde a cofifident race and scored bv half a length.
Equitas, 6.13, was quickly selected as the best at the weights in the County Cup, Moloch being next in demand. .The favourite was in front from the rise of the barrier, and won comfortably from Mataari. In the King Edward Hack, Miscast was at once rushed to the front, and stalling off a challenge in the straight from First Cunjul won by a length.
Happy New Year was first choice for the Trial Plate. She got badly away, and Subdue and then Shimose cut out the running. Te Utuatu looked a winner in the run home, but the favourite put in a final finish, and the judge decided on a dead heat.
The Gladstone Welter finished the day's sport Hiwera was strongly supported, and Captain Bell and Knight Commander had plenty of backers.
